Here is a memory of my visit to
Brigantine Castle in July 1977, when I was in my mid-20's.
I shook hands with what I thought
was a statue (it had an outstretched hand). When I made contact it
moved forward, and I flew backwards 6 feet through the air,
landing on my back. It was the greatest haunted house adventure I
have ever experienced.
An 18-year-old girl had to be
carried out screaming because of the feel of fur balls against her
ankles, and screaming of rats in a blacked-out room which we
walked through by feeling our way along the walls. This preceded
my aforementioned experience. It surprised us when we found out
about it later, as she was a 6-footer, and probably about 200 lbs.

1981. Had some doubts when I started
working at the castle but fell in love with it immediately. Etched
in my mind are the cast, the building, the atmosphere, the whole
pier. I can still smell the creosote on the pilings while ocean
waves crashed against them. I can hear the sounds of seagulls
mixed with the screams and laughter of folks on the beach. I can
still taste the fried food and pizza from the pier while the bells
rang in the arcade followed by calls of the workers running the
games. Cast and crew were a tight knit. A crazy bunch but worked
together famously. Scare and scare alike. Around 10PM, while
monster make-up removed and latex was peeled from our faces, a
familiar, “Ya goin’ to the Beach Bar after work?”, was
heard. No one even needed ask. It was a given. Growing up. Finding
yourself. Couldn’t ask for a better place to do it!
